Kalesvara mudra is practiced by joining middle fingers on their tips while curling other fingers towards the palm. Hence, it is categorized as an hasta mudra.
Meaning
In Kalesvara mudra, Kala means “time” and Ishvara means “Lord” or “God”. It’s named after the Hindu deity Kalesvaram (synonym of Shiva) who rules over time.
One of the major benefits of holding Kalesvara mudra is to get rid of the habit of procrastination. This inculcates the value of time within the practitioner, hence this name.

How to Do Kalesvara Mudra
- Sit in any of your desirable meditative asanas like sukhasana, vajrasana, etc.
- Bring your hands in front of you with palms facing each other.
- Join the tips of both the middle fingers together projecting upward.
- Curl the index, ring, and little fingers inward joining their first and seconds joints.
- Bring the tips of the thumbs together pointing downward.
- A heart-shape is assumed with the curled forefingers and extended thumbs.
- Draw the elbows outward towards the respective sides.
- Keep the hands to the mid-chest level with the thumb pointing towards the sternum.
- Take deep and slow breaths 10 times, then observe the breaths and increase the gap between inhalation and exhalation.
Duration of practice
- Practice Kalesvara mudra for a minimum of 5-10 minutes.
- An advanced practitioner must do it for 20 minutes.
- It is recommended to set an intention before getting into this mudra either to inculcate a desirable habit or to get rid of a bad one.
- Hence, practice it for at least 21 days if you are chasing a good habit and for leaving one, the duration has to be of 41 days.
Practice note:
- You can keep the base of the palms joined together or distant apart.
- Some sources also mention the hand position in Kalesvara mudra in a way that the joined middle fingers lie between the eyebrows.
- Try holding this mudra while meditation practices visualizing the manifestation of set intention while breathing in and out.
